It’s Nice to Be Important, But It Is More Important to Be Nice

One of the way of wisdom’s teachings deals with how we speak to others. “The hearts of those who do right think about how they will answer. But the mouths of those who do wrong pour out evil” (Proverbs 15:28). Also, wisdom teaches us to put into practice the following instructions: “The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction” (Proverbs 16:21). “Pleasant words are like honey. They are sweet to the spirit and bring healing to the body” (Proverbs 16:24 NIrV). “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up” (Proverbs 12:25). So instead of getting cross to get your thoughts across, it is much better to be gentle, pleasant, and kind. In fact, Proverbs 25:15 says, “With patience you can convince a ruler, and a gentle word can get through to the hard-headed” (NCV).

Another teaching instructs us to avoid focusing with jealousy on what others have. Proverbs 14:30 states, “Peace of mind means a healthy body, but jealousy will rot your bones” (NCV). So peace contributes to prolonging one’s life by alleviating the stress and worry one may feel within and the tension one can experience interacting with others.
